At times life can seem like a tragedy that unfolds within an an unyielding and indifferent world. During such times counselling can help. Counselling may be thought of as a process whereby one builds resources that will enable one to cope effectively with the challenges of life. Counsellors facilitate this process by providing a safe, none-judgmental environment wherein clients feel accepted and understood.

Individual counselling can help if you are experiencing distress or are having difficulty functioning in social, occupational or other important areas of your life. Distress and impaired functioning may be associated with a condition, such as depression, generalized anxiety or trauma. Difficult life circumstances, however, can also have a significant impact on one's psychological health.

Fortunately, therapy can help. Many individuals report symptom relief shortly after entering into therapy, and the therapeutic gains are often sustained over the long-term. Although individual counselling may be used as a stand-alone-treatment, it can also serve as a useful adjunct to pharmaceutical treatment, which would be administered by a medical professional.

During your initial meeting you will have the opportunity to assess whether your Counsellor's style and approach will work well for you. Your Counsellor will use the initial session to outline the process of therapy, discuss the limits of confidentiality and answer any questions you might have about the counselling process.
